Irony's A Bi*** Isn't it?

Irony

Oh the Irony....Irony has been huge contribution to my life. Either has it been in my own experience or in those of others. What is irony though? Irony is when an outcome of events contrary to what was, or might have been, expected. Basiclly when you expect something the complete opposite happens. I remember I was going to go to the beach and Oh the irony of it all....it rained. Irony can be very funny at times. Amusing to those around and even the person dealing with the irony. Sometimes irony can be tragic even sad"An old man turned ninety-eight, he won the lottery and died the next day isn't it ironic? Don't you think?"Irony is expressed in many literature.

I recently came across a short story called "Richard Cory" By Edwin Arlington Robinson Which speaks of dramatic irony. Richard Cory a very appealing man to the eyes. Richard seemed as if he had the perfect life and never demonstrated any signs of depression. In fact he spoke eloquently and was a very friendly person."Good Mornings"and "Goodbyes" was always part of his daily schedule. He was envied by many due to his riches and his education ."And he was rich- yes, richer than a king." No one seemed to understand that this was truly an act. He was hiding how miserable he was and His true feelings and desires.Irony is represented is this short story."And Went without meat , and cursed the bread;..And Richard Cory, one calm summer night Went home and put a bullet in his head."The poor envied Richard Cory for his wealth. He at the finest of foods while they starved and relied only on the taste of bread.Which can make anyone become suicidal in complete opposite it was The "Rich" "happy" and "amazing"Richard Cory who was driven to insanity and killed himself.

The Gift of the Magi tells a story of a young couple Mr. and Mrs. James Dillingham Young, married into poverty and living on a weekly income of $20.00. It is Christmas Eve and Della has only one dollar and eight-seven cents to buy a gift for her husband Jim. She believes that with $1.87 isn't enough to buy Jim a gift worthy of him. "She lets down her glorious hair; hair that is the pride and joy of both Della and Jim." Della and Jim have two possessions that are the treasures of the household, Della’s hair and Jim’s watch, which is an inheritance from his grandfather. The value of these treasures are so emmensce that King Solomon and the Queen of Sheba would be jealous of them despite their own immense wealth. Della quickly believes that she should sell her hair and get Jim a gift worth her love for him.. She sold her hair to Sofronie for $20. Then Enters town looking for the perfect gift. She finds a platinum watch chain, which she pays $21 for. She hurries home and suddenly realizes what she has done. Della tries to fix her hair so that Jim will not be too upset by her appearance. Jim finally returns home o suddenly see that His Della's precious hair was gone. She reacted with saying "It will grow back soon" Complete and utter silence occurs. Delia in desperation remembers the gift she got Jim and rushes to give it to him. Della gives Jim a silver watch chain. Jim smiles and tells Della that he sold the watch to buy the combs and that perhaps they should put their gifts up and save them for a later time. The Irony of the story are the gifts the couple gives to each other are useless.Delia can't wear her combs in her short hair, and Jim can't use his watch chain without his watch. The young couple learns that the greatest gift of all is their self-sacrificing love.

"The House that Slaves Built."This Article talks of the origin of the construction of the whitehouse and the Irony behind the current president inhabitating it. The house in which really never welcomed or cared for African Americans and was 200 years ago that it was built by slaves. Also, Thomas Jefferson moved in with nearly a dozen slaves from Monticello, his Virginia home. And slaves made up much of the house's staff until the death in 1850 of Zachary Taylor, the last slaveholder to be President. The irony of the situation is that now the inhabits of the White House are the President and his family which are black.. This shows how certain things change in time. Causing Irony to exist even in historical context.

There is also comical sense of irony as demonstrated in the Cartoon to the left. He asks the reader what he is reading and the reader hasn't answered him. The irony of the situation is the book is called What's it to you? So the Big guy keeps asking the reading to answer him and doesn't see the title. Seems like the big guy is getting angry though.

Irony is somewhat of the truth of situations. Reality we can say. We believe some things are contrary to what we believe is happen because of our way of manipulating things to always seem to be the "positive" outcome of our situations.Irony can be simple Like Rain On you wedding day. . Tragic Irony.Irony is used to bring about truth and recognition, even if that truth was mysterious or enigmatic.
